چکیده

Introduction Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) in sunlight is the most important cause of skin damage and aging.'"' This form of radiation causes skin aging by several mechanisms, including free-radical generation, DNA damage, collagen breakdown, the induction of immune defects, and cell death.'-5 In addition, repeated damage to the skin by sunburn is a primarily risk factor for the development of cutaneous neoplasia, including melanoma. V^hile photoaging may be considered to be the pivotal cause of skin aging or damage, other factors operate.'** Cigarette smoking, various environmental pollutants, and synthetic chemicals (including those present in cosmetic products or sunscreens) can all contribute to dermal pathology and perhaps skin aging.' These external factors may often combine with "intrinsic propensities" to aging. Intrinsic skin aging is characterized by thinning of dermal and epidermal layers of the skin coincidental with the evolution of "immune senescence.'"'̂ The recognition that photoaging is caused primarily by ultraviolet radiation (UVR) has led to conventional wisdom that excessive exposure to sunshine should be avoided. The risks of cutaneous sun damage have led to the widespread application of techniques to protect the skin from sunlight, most often using sun-screening techniques. The objectives of this article are to examine factors that propagate skin phototoxicity (photoaging) and look at natural ways to combat this major public health concern.

Anti-photoaging and Photoprotective Compounds Derived from Marine Organisms

Marine organisms form a prominent component of the oceanic population, which significantly contribute in the production of cosmeceutical and pharmaceutical molecules with biologically efficient moieties. In addition to the molecules of various biological activities like anti-bacterial, anti-cancerous, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative etc., these organisms also produce potential photoprotect...

Age-reversing drugs and devices in dermatology.

The quest for youth and beauty is an ongoing one. No organ conveys youth and beauty to the extent that skin does. Advances in research over the past several decades have yielded a tremendous amount of information on the molecular pathways involved in both intrinsic aging (natural) and extrinsic aging (photoaging). In this article, we aim to describe the molecular pathways that lead to an aged a...

Innovative cosmeceuticals: sirtuin activators and anti-glycation compounds.

Skin aging is a combination of natural aging with superimposed photoaging. Naturally aged skin is thin, fragile and finely wrinkled whereas photoaged skin is rough and thickened with deep coarse wrinkles. In addition photoaging is characterized by mottled pigmentation, solar lentigines, telangectasias and a loss of elasticity. The science behind skin aging has exploded in the past decade. Skin ...

The flavonoid hesperidin exerts anti-photoaging effect by downregulating matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 expression via mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK)-dependent signaling pathways

BACKGROUND Hesperidin is a flavonoid with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immune modulatory activities. Photoaging is a consequence of chronic exposure to the sun and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of hesperidin against photoaging of dorsal skin in hairless mice. METHODS Hairless male mice (6-week-old) were divided into three groups (n = 7): c...
